The hospice nurse must:

  • be licensed as a Registered Nurse, and/or willing to obtain appropriate licenses to provide care in the Hospice of Dubuque service area
  • have the ability to effectively assess and respond to the needs of patients and families in a variety of settings and with varied lifestyles
  • be able to communicate effectively with clients and other staff members
  • be able to participate in the development of the Interdisciplinary Team’s plan of care and provide nursing care within that plan of care
  • be able to document accurate reports of assessments and care provided
  • participate in on-call responsibilities
  • be able to load and unload medical equipment weighing up to 45 pounds
  • be physically able to visit patients in their home and provide full physical care to bed-bound patients in low beds
  • be able to drive in all types of weather
  • have his/her own reliable transportation
  • meet regulatory personnel file requirements
  • be able to meet the Hospice of Dubuque Code of Organizational Ethics and Standards of Conduct        

Although hospice care is a specialty, Hospice of Dubuque will provide the orientation, mentoring, and ongoing education necessary for the Hospice Nurse to be competent in the care he/she will be providing.

Hospice care was critical in caring for my mother. Her nurse and Mom really connected on a personal level, which was key to Mom being comfortable with Hospice. I would recommend Hospice of Dubuque care to anyone dealing with terminal illness and I would further recommend that care be early in the process.
