Therapy Options

A team of professional therapists, including physical, occupational and speech therapists, are available for patients, as assessed by the hospice team. Although not a Medicare requirement, Hospice of Dubuque also offers comprehensive music and massage therapy programs.

Physical Therapy
A licensed physical therapist can assess the patient's level of pain and provide physical therapy, suggest strengthening exercises, and, to ensure safety and an easily accessible environment, can evaluate the patient's equipment and living situation layout.

Occupational Therapy
An occupational therapist can suggest alternatives for daily tasks (eg, brushing teeth, getting dressed, eating).

Speech Therapy
A speech therapist can provide assistance with speaking, communication and swallowing food.

Massage Therapy
A board certified massage therapist is available to provide noninvasive massage, which studies have shown can help with mood, relaxation, pain and other symptoms.

Music Therapy
A music therapist is available to provide music-based interventions to help patients improve comfort and relaxation, elevate mood and to reach non-verbal patients.

Everything happened so fast that it was hard to absorb what was being done at the time. Now as I look back, it was a good experience and my brother was treated with compassion and respect even though he was mentally and physically disabled. This has not always been the case. I was very thankful for the time Hospice spent with the staff that cared for Kenny—I think the sessions helped his staff cope with this emotional and sad time.
